PSA 4 providing increased security at Mariana Bracetti Plaza

This year, EVG contributor Stacie Joy has been reporting on the dangerous living conditions at Mariana Bracetti Plaza, the public housing complex on Third Street and Fourth Street along Avenue C.

In early February, local elected officials and NYCHA deputies met with tenant activists Kanielle Hernandez and Yvette Maria for a firsthand look at the issues here, a list that includes flooding, leaks, sewage and infrastructure issues, broken door locks, trespassing, nonfunctioning elevators,  police response and drug use and sales.

Stacie now reports that officers from Police Service Area 4 (PSA 4), the Avenue C-based station that serves 25 NYCHA developments in the 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th precincts in Manhattan, are working to provide increased security at Mariana Bracetti Plaza.

Stacie took the top photo on Saturday when PSA 4 officers were joined by members of the NYPD's Law Enforcement Explorers program, which is for young men and women ages 14 to 20, at Mariana Bracetti Plaza.

Security aside, there's also an emphasis now on providing educational materials related to COVID-19 testing and vaccinations for the residents... these materials were spotted in the lobby...

  2. What has the PSA been doing this whole time while residents of this building were begging for help?

Kudos to Ms Hernandez and Maria for not being discouraged, and to Ms Joy for the reporting, and to EVG for publicizing the situation. If this hadn't happened, I'm sure nothing would have been done. I still can't believe it took this long to get the attention of our elected reps - what on earth have they been doing if not looking after their own constituents and community members?

  3. This is great! Now can we also get cops out on the beat in our neighborhood to try to stamp out the various quality of life issues that seem to be in a vicious cycle and creating an environment for worse crime?

  4. yes, let's have the famously gentle PSA4 (https://evgrieve.com/2020/10/report-officer-in-violent-arrest-on.html) "stamp out" low level offensese. that's working so well!

  7. This was simply a photo opportunity for elected officials and the police. Nothing has changed for the residents that reside at 290 East 4th Street. In fact, it has gotten worse. The tenants are simply forced to live with drug activity in their stairwells, lobby and in front of the building. Dealers stand outside of the building, drink alcohol, blast music while addicts walk up to the building and purchase their drugs. NYCHA has 18 working cameras and yet they have turned a blind eye to what is happening in their building. Tenants have written, called and emailed NYCHA and elected officials and nothing has changed. Clearly, management needs to be fired!!!
