Someone painted 2 swastikas on the barrier surrounding the 6th Street sinkhole

The sidewalk- and tree pit-eating hole remains unchecked outside 338 E. Sixth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

The sinkhole formed during the drenching rains from Tropical Storm Ida on Sept. 1.

Since then, a makeshift barrier including parts of Awash's outdoor dining space and other found objects have been guarding/blocking the sidewalk. Pedestrians must walk on Sixth Street on the south side of the street to bypass the sinkhole...
Several residents have told us that they have contacted 311, Community Board 3, Councilmember Carlina Rivera's office, the DOT, the 9th Precinct, etc., to report the sinkhole. Repairs await.

And now an EVG reader reports that someone recently drew two swastikas (as well as a comment about President Biden and Gov. Hochul) on the west-facing plywood.

Over the weekend, someone covered the messages with a yoga mat...

  1. Swastikas are certainly not welcome but the NYPD also needs to do something about the graffiti in general. Spray painting peoples buildings or business windows is not art and they should be arrested.

    1. I blame the city and the mayor for the destruction the had plagued the city and neighborhood vandalism has destroyed people’s home and business and the mayor does nothing to save this city from this I find the people that do this are heartless and selfish and they should pay heavy fines and Prison time for the crimes against humanity

  2. Just walked by a lowlife Graffitting businesses on 1st Avenue at 11AM. The 20 something year old idiot gave me a very hard stare as I looked at what he was doing and rode off on his Skateboard along First avenue. Interesting as there are never any Police cars when you need them

  3. Someone has also spray painted multiple messages in the East River Park stating that covid vaccines are a hoax. It may be the same person. Seems like an organized effort and not just a spur of the moment act of stupidity.

  4. Are there any surveillance cameras nearby that can catch the asswipes who did this?

  5. @4:58 even if there was security evidence that would not be enough to prosecute any for spray painting on a piece of wood that was being used as a blockade. I understand what was painted is hateful but there is so much other violent nonsense going on right now.

  6. for months there is a real threat to life here requiring senior citizens and children walking into traffic 100's of times a day because illegal unused outdoor dining areas before and abandoned building landlords blocked the gutter and washed out the sidewalk. that is one dorked looking swastika!
