Tree pit sinkhole on 6th Street

Beware of the tree pit sinkhole on Sixth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue that has caused a partial sidewalk collapse as well...
This is outside 338 E. Sixth St. (Awash Ethiopian Restauranttry the shiro wat! — is the retail tenant) ... Not sure when this happened — during the Ida downpour on Wednesday night?

Speaking of 6th Street, does anyone know why there has been water on the street at 6th and Avenue A for several weeks even in dry weather? I see no leak there.

Get ready for more East Village basement flooding after they build the wall around lower Manhattan, and the water from the sky has nowhere else to go.

We have got a potential tree pit sinkhole on 12th Street near Avenue A. The restaurant in the corner washes the sidewalk with a power washer and bleach every morning and it all drains into the tree pit. The sidewalk is visibly sinking and you can see the dirt is washing away and a hole is forming on the side of the tree pit. We have told the restaurant the sidewalk is going to collapse eventually and the bleach is going to kill the tree but they won’t stop doing it. Is there anyone from the city that could help? Aside from damaging the sidewalk it would be a shame to lose that tree.

The sidewalk on 6th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues is too narrow and needs to be widened.

I’ve been wondering the same thing…

@ Wald judging from your past posts it appears that you're a bit obsessed with narrow sidewalks. The city is not about to embark on a program of widening them. Even along uptown fifth ave where they are proposing extending the sidewalk for dining, there is no plan for reconfiguring the curb, just painting the asphalt as the accommodation

I wonder if this is another situation where a restaurant is hosing down the sidewalk because of the mess left behind by outdoor dining and the water is running into the tree pit and getting underneath the sidewalk. Does anyone on 6th know if that is what is happening?
