Tuesday's parting shot

As the city's East Side Coastal Resiliency Project moves forward, workers began cutting down trees in East River Park south of Stanton Street today.

This small grove of cherry trees was the first to go.

In total, the city plans to cut down 1,000 trees during the five-plus year rebuild of the park.

  2. So Freckin sad - these trees do not need to be cut down as we all know, they can put 8ft of earth around them and they will still survive.

  3. Man, I'm always so grateful that we get to experience mature parks with fully grown trees. Look at pictures of parks when they were first created and you quickly get an appreciation of older parks. Yes we need to do something to prevent flooding (OF COURSE)... but The fact we cannot come up with a way that doesn't include destroying the legacy of this park is a travesty.

  4. Wow they did not waste any time did they? Just got approval to start work on Monday and now they are cutting down all the trees. I especially liked those cherry trees in the springtime with all the pinkish colored leaves that would bloom. Not any more. What a shame.

  8. So very sad, and so unnecessary. There is a plan to save the park and protect the neighborhood.

  9. This reminds me of when workers smashed all the windows in St Brigid's church when people were up in arms about preserving them. They were destroyed right away to shut people up, enabling demolition to continue without opposition. I wonder if they went after the cherry trees first, knowing they were the most beautiful and loved.
