Report: Man shot dead on 3rd Street and Avenue D last night

A man was shot and killed last night on Avenue D and Third Street around 11:15, according to media accounts and police sources.

CBS 2 reports that the victim is 39-year-old Bronx resident Brandon Atkinson. He was found with a gunshot wound to the head and pronounced dead at Bellevue.

No other details are currently available.

This was one of four shootings last night or early this morning in the southern half of Manhattan.

Per NBC New York
The shootings will compound the problem already plaguing Manhattan this year, as the city confronts a massive spike in violent crime. Year-to-date through May 8, shooting incidents in the NYPD"s Patrol Borough Manhattan South are up 31% over last year.

According to the NYPD's CompStat system, for the period from Jan. 1 to May 8, shooting incidents in Manhattan South are now at their highest since 1997.
On April 29 at 9 a.m., a 42-year-old man was shot and killed outside the Mariana Bracetti Plaza public housing development on Fourth Street at Avenue C. Police arrested a suspect in that shooting.

  2. Or you could consider poverty, under educated young men with no marketable skills turning to drugs and crime to make a living which usually ends with an early death.

  4. I live near this. It freaks me out. Look around us here in NYC, upstate and across the US. Crime is soaring everywhere. Guns and automatic assault rifles are more ubiquitous than human beings are. Mental illness is pervasive. What is even more terrifying are the many whom will not address their issues and gain access to the professional assistance they so desperately need. Such dreadful statistics. Mayor Adams enjoys hamming it up for the cameras on red carpets at numerous events from both sides of the coast while gaslighting us about the constant dangers we face on the streets and on the subway from gang members, hooligans, and depraved individuals with nothing else better to do. He should drop the arrogance and the ego, and search for resolutions to our growing problems in the city that he claims to love. Mayor Adams should also realize he is not in a reality show. No one cares how popular you are or how many followers you garnered on social media or how suave you appear. You wanted this job? Get to work and clean up this crazy mess before we are afraid to leave our apartments during the day for a bag of groceries.

  5. Regarding Mayor Adams, he is just not the right guy for the job. He shows no interest in fixing the things that need fixing. Based on his performance so far he had no right running for Mayor and no right accepting the job. As we speak he is probably on the phone finding out how to get on Dancing With The Stars. He’s a bum.

  6. Hear! Hear! 2:25 Mayor Adams has gotta stop waiting on D.C. it's really frustrating because it seems that Adams is the decider when it comes to hiring known criminals to serve in his administration but it's D.C or Albany issue when it come to guns, crime and quality of life issues

agree with Mayor Adams that While both D.C & Albany need to rethink policy and approach to crime but come on Mayor Adams show us that you're not all sizzle but no steak

  7. I agree that Mayor Adams is the wrong guy for the job, but no Mayor, Governor or President can stop the gun violence that is the result of lax gun laws that have allowed several hundred million guns in the hands of anyone who wants one. Over a million people have died in the US due to guns since John Lennon was assassinated in 1980. That is roughly the same number of people who have died in every war this country has ever fought since 1776, but it only took 40 years. We can blame individual politicians all we want, but the system does not give any individual the power to stop this violence. Other countries have mental health issues too, and video games and violent movies, but they don’t have easy access to guns. Just assume anyone you pass on the street has a gun and act accordingly, because neither Mayor Adams or any other politician is going to save you.
