Today in civic duty

As seen on Ninth Street and Avenue A — a squished spotted lanternfly. (Thanks to Steven for the photo!

The "invasive pests" recently made an NYC return... prompting (reluctant?) kill/squish orders from city officials ... and fun headlines, like!

 • Sex-crazed lanternfly invasion ramps up in NYC as insects look for mates (The Postnaturally!

 • In the Lanternfly War, Some Take the Bug’s Side (The Times

• On the hunt with New York’s spotted lanternfly squishers: ‘I came to kill’ (The Guardian)

Read less tabloid-y ways to squish and dispose of these sex-crazed invaders (just another weekend night!) at the Parks Department site.

  3. Instead of killing these creatures, capture them and relocate them to Trump Tower. You can take a tax write off

  4. I had only seen one of these up until this weekend, when I saw at least half a dozen. They don't fly like other bugs, they look like they're from another planet. . I'm on team squish!

  6. Yes I have seen Spotted Lanternfly's all over the LES/EV and I have stepped on many of them but sometimes they fly away at the last minute before I can get my foot down. They are also very well camouflaged with the color of the top of their wings blending into the sidewalk. I also tried to drown one I found in the Hamilton Fish park swimming pool but after I splashed a lot of water on the insect it ended up flying away. It is a very resilient bug.
