ReplyDeleteThat location also housed a Walgreen's and way before that was a Conran's home goods store.

Astor Wines is in a gorgeous building & I prefer the new location. That being said - I'm excited to try these chicken strips. They come highly regarded and moderation on my part will be key..

ReplyDeleteIf St. Marks Bookshop was paying $20000 for 2600 sq ft around the corner, a few year’s back, then this 4300 sq ft space is probably paying well North of $33,000 a month. That’s a lot of people buying fried chicken fingers, all day, everyday. I don’t see the Z-ers and Millies doing that, it’s too down market for them for a start. Although come to think of it Cluck U chicken *is* popular in New Jersey, where many originate from, so there’s that.

ReplyDeleteSorry everyone who is so upset time moves. Whatever was there isn’t anymore. Gogo Canes. It’s good stuff. And it actually occupies a space. It doesn’t just exist in a memory.
ReplyDeleteYes, time moves on..but more than the particular stores and restaurants we look back on, what has been lost here in the EV ( and doubtlessly in the rest of NYC) is the sense of community: the mom and pop shops where you knew the people behind the counters, the wait staff knew your name, the idea that your neighbors knew you and would be there for years, not just passing through. The place where businesses were part of the community, not just another number on the bottom line.

ReplyDeleteAlso, not sure if you heard this but they're also opening one in Penn Station!! As of Monday of this week, the windows/doors of all the restaurants and stores that are set to open in the LIRR part of Penn Station once renovations are done were revealed. One of those is Raising Cane's !!! Shake Shack is another one which is pretty awesome but yeah, definitely more stoked about the Raising Cane's !! So as of right now, it seems like they're opening up 3 locations in NYC - Penn Station, Astor Place, and Times Square. I NEED some Cane's sauce ASAPPP!!!
