Help for A&C Kitchen, which remains closed after a late-February fire

On Feb. 27, a two-alarm fire broke out at 136 Avenue C between Eighth Street and Ninth Street.

Initial reports blamed a "lit object" discarded from a residential window down to the courtyard in the rear of the building. Unfortunately, a groundfloor tenant, A&C Kitchen, the longtime quick-serve and affordable Chinese restaurant, remains closed.

Sierra Zamarripa, who owns Lovewild Design next door, recently started a crowdfunding campaign to help Mr. Li, who has run A&C Kitchen for 30-plus years, with lost income over the past two months as well as other additional reopening expenses.

  1. I've been a loyal patron of this business since moving into our hood during spring of 2010. The owners are hard working and kind. Their food is always delicious. I hoped that their insurance would cover a disaster like this. Apparently not. I will definitely contribute to this fund. Thanks for the update, EV Grieve.

  2. I hope the community will support Mr. Li in every way, including the gofundme, so he can reopen his restaurant ASAP.

It's shocking that this kind of thing can happen, where the fire was totally someone else's fault, but it's Mr. Li whose business and income are being most affected.

Fellow residents of the East Village, let's show how strongly our community comes together to support a local business like this.

  3. I just shared the GoFundMe on three platforms, and hope others will too; I sorely miss the Hijiki-tofu burger—which came over via a cook from Dojo Restaurant on St. Mark's place when that place closed.

    (Yes, I'm also donating.)

The same thing happened several months ago at Essex Card Shop, which fortunately has reopened; they also required a GoFundMe™ to get back on their feet.
