Updated 8/8: We have an update on the lights here. Spoiler: Timer issue.
-----
The lights were on in Tompkins Square Park last evening...
... and for the first time since Thursday night, according to multiple residents.
Here's one reader report about Friday night:
The entire park was dark last night and the previous one. People were using their phone flashlights to navigate. Oddly, the only lights that were working were in the construction trailer outside the field house. No cops anywhere despite recently seeing patrols earlier in the week, but I'm guessing the Union Square incident likely had their focus elsewhere. Very bizarre, and I've never seen anything like it.
EVG reader Janie Heath shared this clip from Saturday on Avenue A near the Seventh Street entrance that shows a completely dark Park ... and people entering nonetheless...
Also, on Saturday night: Someone called 911 to report a "blackout," per the Citizen app ... (and the blackout was IN the park, and yes, that Thompson error)...
We contacted a parks rep about what may have happened with the lights.
Also of note: The lights were ON during the day yesterday.
And this comes after weeks that the lights were on throughout the day. Our taxes at work.
ReplyDeleteSeems to align with the world we live in these days.

ReplyDeleteThanks, grieve.
It was very cool. Once your eyes adjusted there was enough ambient light from the rest of the city to easily walk around but there were a lot of cell phone flashlights out. Cops were there the second night for a while, parked with flashers blazing. A few activists set up a television set and their literature table reportedly showed an antivax video in the dark. Lights actually went back on in the middle of the night. It's too bad the sky was overcast every night. Would have been nice to see a few more stars.
ReplyDeleteA lot less artificial light, especially in the evening, would be appreciated but I'm sure out of the question.
Dk if this is related, but there was an electrical outage event on E. 9th St. between 1st and 2nd Aves on Saturday that affected the whole block. It was from about 12:30-7pm.
ReplyDeleteThe lights are turned on and off from timers in the field house. I’m sure they were knocked out of whack during the renovations
ReplyDeleteIt was actually kind of nice. I sat on a bench talking with my son for an hour one of those evenings, and once it eyes adjusted, we could see well enough, and everything looked very lovely
