Once again, someone slapped the exterior of 57 Great Jones St. with pink paint and once again rolled out the commemorative plaque for one-time resident Jean-Michel Basquiat...
This happened late last summer here between the Bowery and Lafayette. (We've been told the person who did this is obsessed with Basquiat, who lived and worked in the building once owned by Andy Warhol from 1983 to his death in 1988.)
Angelina Jolie opened Atelier Jolie here late last year... the space includes a cafe operated by Eat Offbeat featuring food "from around the world made by refugee chefs in NYC." (Try the baklava!)
Seriously. What is wrong with the East Village of late?
ReplyDeleteThe level of brain damage in this neighborhood is reaching epic proportions.
I guess this color choice is a reference to the Basquiat movie where Schanbel is critiquing JMs painting in his studio and points at one rather large, messy unfinished canvas and says "This one needs more pink."
ReplyDelete@Sleepless in EV: they're nothing "wrong with the East Village". It's the work of one individual who obviously has issues. Blaming the entire neighbor is weird.

the PINK gets covered & tagged over night.
But I don't like the PINK spray over Basquiat's plaque, it's hard to read and will be hard to clean. And I believe it's very disrespectful! That's just me
I don't see how this is anybody's problem. It's more like an art happening. Get photo evidence for next time. You can make it a series and when you sell it (the series) you can indicate you're missing the first iteration.
