Sometime in the past two days, someone rolled over all the art with pink paint at 57 Great Jones St. between the Bowery and Lafayette... even painting over the memorial plaque for onetime tenant Jean-Michel Basquiat, who lived and worked here from 1983 to the time of his death in 1988...
Earlier this summer, Angelina Jolie announced a new venture, Atelier Jolie — "a creative collective for self-expression" — opening this fall inside the space.

The exterior needs something intentional that speaks to its history and not a bunch of crap going up on it all of the time otherwise this will keep happening. The big crown on the white building was a good idea. The rest is just masturbation.

I thought Basquiat personified graffiti and no would dare criticize this act of art!
Even painting over the Basquiat plaque? Hard not to read this act as vandalism and contempt.

As Someone Who lived in at 57 circa 90 and also tried to re lease it Unsuccessfully ( for Historic Preservation Reasoning in Conjunction with Willoby Sharpe Me suggesting to maintain its first floor as an art gallery / museum ) Upon it being given back to The Warhol Estate after their Rental increase & then the subsequent following liquidation of it by the Estate .. i am less horrified by the awful graffiti then by the ad firm that gutted the space prior to the Japanese restaurant both having removed historic walls to one of Andys factories and solid round pillars on the first floor that were painted and marked By Jean Michel as also the upstairs being more historic then all of Mary Boones basements lol. The fact that JMs estate was never even considered to purchase the space baffles Me. The cost now far too great it should have been given to them though thats not how expensive Manhattan realestate works sadly. It would much moreso be appropriate for the Basquait estates traveling show to be permanently housed there. Even the band Abba has 2 museums for God sake ! I applaud A. Jolie for her aspirations and intentions and her even if contractual ( very pricey acquisition ) deemed tangible respect of the exterior of 57 i truly believe she would on her own regardless . she wasnt filling Audrey Hepburns role of Ambassador for Peace USA for nothing . namaste
Basquiat would be ok with it . It’s public art .
