Planet Taco exits East Village orbit

Photos by Steven

Planet Taco shut down its East Village operations on Sunday, bringing an end to the shop's three-plus-year run at 141 Second Ave. between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street.

In a note to patrons, ownership blamed "rising costs" for the closure...
The Planet Taco on Ninth Avenue remains open.

Planet Taco opened in March 2021 and received generally positive reviews from readers and critics

The address previously housed Otto's Tacos for seven years. Before that, many things came and went here, such as Good Guys, a Subway (sandwich shop), part of a Max Brenner outpost and Burritoville (!!!).

  1. Ate there once, it tasted like Chef Boyardee. I can see where their style had visual appeal, that's not enough these days.

Very close by are Birria LES, Taqueria St Marks, Sabor, and Tacos Morelos. The village has got you covered.

  2. No! Planet Taco was insanely good. Inventive flavors and fantastic service. The owner was often working.

  3. My husband and I loved Planet tacos - very creative ingredients, always trying a new taco on each visit. I am sad to see Planet Taco go. We'll just have to bike over to 9th Ave.

  4. Why is every restaurant on 2nd ave closing suddenly? What are the landlords doing to these businesses? I have lived here 2 years and most restaurants near me have closed and are either vacant or barely getting reopened by new owners..

  5. Actually there standard burrito with pinto was the best (closest to mission style) I found in the neighborhood. I always wondered whether the novelty flavors image hurt them. They were open late too.
