Curbside comeback: Tree beds revived along this section of 2nd Avenue

Photos by Stacie Joy

The rather barren stretch along the east side of Second Avenue between Third Street and First Street is looking a little better these days. (H/T csw!)

Last week, The Sidewalk Gardeners, who specialize in sidewalk tree bed revitalization, did just that along this corridor...
Here's more via an Instagram post about the project:
Sponsored by a nearby condo resident, we are on a mission to rehabbing forgotten tree beds between 1st and 3rd St. Full of trash, waste and even a dead bird, if not properly cared for, many of these spaces can carry diseases and attract rodents and pests.

"I know my dog shouldn't pee in these, but he's already familiar with these tree beds and it's easier for me to clean up here. Dogs can only pee on dirt after all. I pick up the poop, so it's not like that matters. I don't think my dog's scratching at and kicking up dirt impacts these plants. Or the pee, for that matter. It's just a little pee from one dog. He only pees here because so many other dogs have already peed here. I noticed that somebody worked on these plants, and that my dog is just pissing on their work, but...I try to not think about these two things at the same time. Look, I can't control where my dog goes to the bathroom. Except inside, because he's housebroken. But once outside, I'd have to pull him away from the tree beds and that takes...I'm not sure what that takes. Peeing on the curb isn't natural for my dog, because...reasons. I'm going back to looking at my phone while I ignore my dog and my community at the same time."

JK who pissed in your Post Toasties this morning? Such an angry screed first thing in the morning on an article about a positive, lovely event in our neighborhood at a time when everything else seems to be spiraling out of control. Cheer up!

JK, Wrong!!! Guess where dogs peed before the city's campaign to install thousands of trees throughout the city? Yup in the curb or street gutter, hence "curb your dog". Dogs are amazing animals and that is mostly due to how "trainable" they are. It's up to you not your dog to decide where it does its business, stop making excuses and be responsible.
