Ephemeral New York has an interesting piece on two East Village backhouses — "a second house (or rear house, as they were known in the 19th century) built behind a street-facing dwelling."
Check out more about these buildings hidden from the sidewalk between 12th Street and 13th Street (Avenue A and First Avenue) at this
link.

There's one on East 9 St too. Between 1st & 2nd (closer to 1st)
There are several around here, including behind 135 Avenue A (where Lucy's is).
I lived in one on 6th st between 1st and 2nd - right between the Raj Mahal and Taj Mahal back then. I believe it was 2003-2011 - wish i had more pics.
Got one in the middle between 528 East 11th Street and 325 East 10th St, belonging to the 10th St address.
#backbuildingstrong for ever!
That building just underwent a gut renovation under its new owners. It was not fun for the few people who declined to move out (my sister among them), but the garden between the main building and the "back house" is looking lovely.
