Gardening in public areas is really difficult as people frequently steal the flowers being grown, use tree pits for their dogs to relieve themselves or as places to throw their garbage into not caring about what the community is trying to grow there. All we can do is clean up the mess, replant and keep trying.
We seem to have a generation of people who feel no social responsibility to anyone or anything. Except themselves. Last week I stopped a well-dressed and groomed young man riding his push scooter on the sidewalk and explained to him that he shouldn't be there. His reply, "F*ck off, old man." This morning I was almost taken down by a bicycle who roared through a red light as I stepped off the curb. A truck parked at the corner blocked my view of the oncoming traffic. Streets and sidewalks are chaotic and dangerous for pedestrians, especially the elderly.
Right in front of Allen Ginsberg's old place too. Read "Sunflower Sutra" - one of my favorites of all time: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/49304/sunflower-sutra

That really f’ing sucks!
Agree that it is silly to not expect someone to mess with the plant. Sad but true.
Not at all surprised.

@Brian - It's wasn't silly, it was beautifully idealistic. People just have to go and be total swine and ruin things for everyone else.
