Report of a roof fire at 433 E. 13th St.

Just after 6 p.m., the FDNY responded to a report of a roof-deck fire at 433 E. 13th St. between Avenue A and First Avenue. 

According to a Citizen app, "firefighters quickly contained a fire involving trees on the roof... preventing the blaze from spreading to other areas." That report was corroborated by witnesses.
The fire response drew a big crowd... luckily there weren't any reports of injuries.
The amenities at the newish building (at the site of the former Peter Stuyvesant PO), EVE East Village, include a "sunny roof deck, complete with a grassy lawn, a sizable BBQ area, and an outdoor TV with sound system," per its website.

    Our very own "forest fire"! Congrats NYC.
    Trees in pots without routine maintenance die, especially during a harsh winter, & become standing firewood. Add inexperienced BBQ fire builders and voila!
    The DOB seems to not have a roof deck check-up system. I reported a fallen potted tree over 3 times over 3-4 years for being blown over & leaning on a parapet railing. This Winter it blew over once again & months later the building finally removed the tree.

      Appreciate your sense of civic responsibility. I would never have thought that roof decks weren’t DOB inspected. After witnessing some wild rooftop parties, including one with way too many people, a dj, those tall gas powered heat lamps and the fire department stopping it, I am going to ask 311 about it and Harvey Epstein’s office. Hope others do the same, particularly now party season is upon us.

    In my building tenants held wild roof parties. One day I noticed a box for a portable fire pit. I told the super. And he ran up to the roof and took it away. The next week there was another box in the garbage for a fire pit. I told the super and he ran up to the roof . This time the tenant chained it to the side wall. He had to rip it out. I never saw another fire pit box. The super told me a tenant called to say somebody stole his fire pit twice. He cursed him out(His usual response to any complaint.) . Something about turning his ass into a fire pit.
