Yesterday, Starbucks announced plans to close 250 North American locations, its second major round of cuts under CEO Brian Niccol ... cuts that KO'd the outpost on First Avenue and 13th Street.
The company said the locations targeted are underperforming financially or don't meet its standards for the customer and employee experience.
This outpost opened in August 2017, and some residents saw it as (another) dagger in the heart of the East Village.
With this closure, ONE Starbucks remains in the East Village — First Avenue at Third Street.
So what bar would you like to see take over this prime EV space?

Say what you will about big corporations in the EV, but this was the only coffee house (aside from the other Starbucks in the neighborhood) open before 7 AM, and for that I will miss them. …but only a little.

This is bad in regards to overall economy. Now if that place doesn't get leased quickly... Expect homeless hanging around there posting up similar to the NYU news lately.

2nd ave and 9th st.
6th st between 3rd and 4th ave
Astor place (right next to the other one)
Ave A and 6th st
1st ave and 3rd st
There's only one of those left. Crazy how this goes.

Dating myself but I remember the good old days when the only place you could buy Starbucks coffee was at a JFK airport concession - the shock of the new!
I hate to say it, but that bathroom was effing useful.

It was my kids' favorite bathroom! But also the employees were really sweet. We will miss them. Good riddance to Starbucks.
they should have raised their prices. how can you make a profit only charging $7 for a cup of coffee.
i never understood why people went to that starbucks when thayer and cafe chrystie are a block away w such great coffee
oh thank god. let the Ukrainains serve coffee, or buy it in Chinatown for $1. of Ray. something unique. always hated that there was a corporate chain store on Avenue A. Yaaaaahhhh
Unfortunately it's not only big business, small businesses / mom and pops also raise prices due to increase costs... It's basic economics.
FYI Barnes and Noble often has Starbucks inside. We’re about to get both in Ave A

Nonsense, locals drink Starbucks forever, since the "hot models Starbucks" on 1st Ave & 9th in the 90's.
$7 is the price for decent coffee in 2026. Thanks Obama.
Go look at their Yelp page and search for the fourth or fifth tab. This review dates back to 2019. It is brutally funny. There is a young man who describes in horrifying detail how he needed to use the bathroom during an emergency for a stomach issue where he was met with constant knocks from employees and patrons for several minutes. I never wanted to use their facilities after that, especially since I live two blocks away. The customer service was hit or miss. The music was jarringly loud ALL THE TIME. They offered delicious pastries and breakfast sandwiches however. I wish the employees well and hope they secure adequate employment soon, especially in this dreadful economy. RIP Starbucks on St. Mark's
This is such a triumph for this neighborhood. As long as I've lived here (18 years) we've pushed out chains in favor of small business and this CONTINUES. EAST VILLAGE WILL NEVER BE ANYWHERE USA

Small businesses don't last anymore... Please take a look at the statistics of EV of closures and the average time new small businesses stay open... It's hard and at least the corporations do provide W2 jobs which now these workers are impacted... Been living here all my life and the amount of closures, openings and closures again... Only thing that lasts are bars cause ppl go to escape the reality
Starbucks is a union buster. Forced labor lawsuits too. Their coffee is bitter and overpriced. Out with the old in with new. I wish all the best to the employees though.
