Why 99X is closing

Yesterday, we reported that 99X was closing up shop on 10th Street... we asked Bert at 99X via e-mail what happened:

It was a combination of things. Drop in sales/poor economy, a lot of stores went out on the block so there is not that much foot traffic, the rent is high and Fred Perry opened a store down in SOHO which took a lot of our business. Everything did not happen all at once but it all happened within the past year and has gotten us to where we are now.

  4. Oh I thought you meant the radio station. And then I remembered that I'm not a teenager any more. Thanks for the reminder.

  5. This is going to be one heck of a super-duper long shot, but here goes.

I once bought a pair of distressed Vans sneakers at 99X -- among many other shoes through the years the place was in business -- that I have not seen since. I love these things like mad, and have just about wore the life out of them.

My question: Did the store employees do the distressing themselves?

Thanks upfront for approving this comment, knowing full well that my question will probably go answered...

And thanks to 99X. You are still missed.

Found myself on this site after I had a dream about our shop. I do have an answer for you...the Vans came that way but I'm sure you could find someone that could distress them.

Thank you all for the continued support. We miss the shop very much and all of you too!

Sorry for this monster link, but do you mean the distressed Vans Formula Ones?

I know how you feel, there's a pair of discontinued Visions I still dream about. And 99X was a great place. :)

  9. I was a late 80s customer thinking about the shop...
I was visiting.from Detroit, and being a proper little Bootboy this was the first shop I saw Ranger sole Dr. Martens and HAD to have them..
And a few pair of Neon socks.

Thats was when it was still somewhat dangerous to be a Hardcore Punk and Prior to every Skinhead being questioned if they were a Nazi.
Id give anything to have these days back because not much has changed with ME...
But it just isnt the same...
This will be sorley missed and etched into.the memorys of those of us who were there.
