Carroll Gardens institution PJ Hanley's opening an East Village outpost on First Avenue



Many thanks to EV Grieve reader dmbream for pointing out that work started yesterday at the long-dormant 122 First Ave. -- between Ruben's and Kim's (Seventh Street and St. Mark's). According to the work permits, the space is being renovated by the folks behind P.J. Hanley's, the Carroll Gardens mainstay and one of the alleged oldest pubs in Brooklyn.



As Jeremiah first reported back in June 2008, this space -- the former Cosmos Parcels, a 45-year-old Ukrainian packing and shipping shop -- would soon become a jazz cafe. I liked the sound of the plans for the jazz cafe. Do we really need an Irish pub here?

    they're putting a bar right next to a bar? (which happens to be next to a beer and sausage joint.) what about the 500-foot rule? can PJ Hanley's really make a case they're bringing a necessary service to the community?

    I noticed that the hookah joint moved out of the former Prana right across the street. Wonder what will happen there. Maybe Prana will finally return. (Yeah, right.)

    The area will become like North Clark street in Chicago filled with bars and drinking places, with college kids puking this lungs out. Goodbye East Village, but you know, I did a hell of a lot puking there too. That's life, I guess...

    Lunasa has a garden, as well, and all the trimmings of a classic neighborhood bar. If Hanley's does get to open, I'd be quite to content to never step foot inside in protest, or, at least, tempered indifference to their lack of creativity.

    I love a good jazz club as much as anyone, but Jules is half a block away (I know, I know) and how sustainable do we think a place like that will be in an area with no shortage of similar establishments?

    I have no interest in places that will come and go in 9 months.

    Who comes up with this stuff?

    Anyone want to open a doggy day care place where the hookah place was?

    Could not happen to more deserving neighbor's...the ones who have window's facing the outdoor space and the bar next to the sausage place.
    Where do I sign the petition for them to get their liquor license and how do you spell Shodden-Frued ?

    Asking around.

    Word is that it is the PJ Hanley's folks, but that they may be opening a pizza shop.

    Guess this is a wait and see for now.
