Buckets of beer at the Neptune

You know, it has been a long time since I've eaten at the Neptune on First Avenue between 11th Street and 12th Street ... Too long! So I headed that way for a meal...



...and I was surprised to see this sign in the window...



A bucket of beers for $15? Wake up after 5? Seems awfully, say, Village Pourhouse-y for the Neptune... I suppose this is the reality for places such as the Neptune to compete with so many fratty bars around... they are reduced to this.

    On the bright side, the Neptune is still the only "retaurant" in the whole of New York.

    On why Neptune isn't popular with foodies (or why couples break-up at Neptune)

    The idea belonged to Chang’s then-boyfriend, another card-carrying food fanatic. (For the couple’s first date, they had gone to a festival called “Egg Rolls and Egg Creams.”) Telling me about the Neptune debacle, Chang sounds depressed, apologetic even. “We happened to be in Union Square, which always throws us off in our food choices,” she says. She had suggested ABC Kitchen for her favorite cumin-carrot salad and a glass of wine. Maybe Cotan for Japanese? Or Zabb Elee for Thai? But no, the boyfriend insisted on Neptune. He felt really bad, she says. “It was the first time he’s ever struck out picking a restaurant.” They broke up not long afterward.

    Thanks for the links. Didn't know that Eater picked up the story and that Chang posted a reply and used to work for Bon Appétit magazine.

    Insufferable indeed. Mind-boggling that she would break-up with her BF just because he took her too Neptune, an old school New York establishment that serves home-cook affordable meal. I guess she prefers a hipster Kielbasa.
