Some future new bars to maybe not like

I haven't even written about all the action from the last CB3/SLA meeting... and the CB3/SLA released the docket for the July meeting... and this one has a few summer blockbusters... (Eater and Fork in the Road noted a few of these last Friday afternoon...)

The big one: The historic Amato Opera on the Bowery is destined to become a bar.

Of course! I recently noted the new for rent sign on the building, which said that food was OK here... So, the owners of V Bar, a West Village beer-and-wine cafe, are taking the challenge... which might be why someone removed the commemorative plaque that was placed above the Amato Opera doorway last June.

[Update: Thanks to EV Grieve Mimi reader for pointing out there's a V Bar on First Avenue and St. Mark's Place too, at the former Tribe space. Same owners at the West Village location.]

Also! There are takers for the Butcher Bar space on East Fifth Street and Lilly Coogan's on First Avenue...

A few more highlights....

  2. I'm curious if it was some from the Amato who decided to keep it... or the realtor...or maybe it was stolen?

Wondering of the new owners will pay homage to the Amato's 61 years year...??

  3. the new owners will pay homage to nothing. unless they turn it into an opera-themed Disney bar, in which case it won't be paying homage, either. it will be appropriating and humiliating.

they can call it The Opera House Lounge. put up some gaslights, make it faux 1890s. name their special cosmopolitan La Boheme, "in homage" to the bohemian poet past, etc., etc.

people will complain. the bar owners will say, "it's better than a bank!" to shut people up. unfortunately, that tired rhetoric will work.

  4. Isn't V bar also the name of the bar on the south-east corner of 1st av and St Marks? I think that's what it says in their window.

  5. Maybe Vbar Amato will be where the fat lady finally sings and draws the final curtain on the Bowery.

  8. I wish that instead this were transformed into a small movie theater like the one that was at Two Boots (dreamy sigh)

Even though Jeremiah is clearly kidding, this is still a far better concept than 99% of what hits CB3 these days!
