All sorts of reports of low-flying helicopters around Avenue A

Several readers have sent along notes asking what is going on now above Avenue A...

We spotted one helicopter awfully close to rooftops along Avenue A near St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street... We heard another report of helicopters above Second Avenue and Sixth Street... another reader reports seeing four low-flying helicopters... Nothing on the ground (massive police presence, say) indicates anything major is going on... I asked some teens (my mistake!) what was happening... They said someone jumped off the roof, then started laughing...

  1. Weird. I was outside on 1st Ave and everything was fine. Two minutes after I came in, there was one hovering right over the building and going up and down 6th St. It got so close at one point, I thought it was going to land on the roof. Maybe they're searching for someone who went into the park?

  2. The one hovering at Ninth and A took off toward the east, and I thought that was that. About 10 minutes later, it was back...

  3. There were several police cars on St. Mark's & 1st while the chopper was up there. Not sure what they were looking for but they seemed to either have found it or they gave up.

  11. The cops blocked off my street (E 10th btw 1st & A) with a squad car as I was arriving home from work. There were 4 or 5 cops standing around on my block. I saw 3 cops talking to a tall man by the First Avenue Gourmet Deli. The man might have been a victim of a crime or a witness. It seemed like the cops were making a report of whatever the tall man was saying. They were relaxed with the man--not in a defensive stance.

One police helicopter hovered over my building for several minutes and then a second helicopter joined it. They hovered for another minute or two and then headed further east.

Do the cops use the helicopters in other neighborhoods or just the East Village?

  12. They had the spotlight and were looking on tops of buildings. Police cars also blocked off 10th street between 1st and A. I asked one of the cops what was going on and he just shooed me away. Some sort of manhunt?

  13. I went up on our roof on 10th between 1st and A. The helicopter was about a block south of me, between 8th and 9th streets. It was shining its spotlight on the roofs of the buildings on the south side of 10th St. There were cops on the roofs too. Looked like a manhunt. Reminded me of the fugitive... "it was the one armed man."

  14. fuckin cops. there could be 10 bodies lying there, and you could ask what happened and they'd say Oh, nothing — just routine.

  15. I was in the park around 5:30/6pm and the helicopter kept going around the park for a while. We kept wondering what was going on, than as I walked out to avenue a there was a cop car outside thee park so my friend went over to them and asked what was up, and the cop said its looking for someone on the roofs or something. Makes no sense.

  17. I saw LES Jewels get punched in the face before I went on vacation! I don't want to go into details because I overheard some private issues as to why the guy was going to punch him (and did!) it was actually really really sad

  18. Jewels has been beaten at least once every week since he got out of jail 2 months ago. He's currently nursing 2 broken collar bones, with both arms in slings. Each and every time, he's had it coming....

  19. That just happened again. Apparently it was close to the Williamsburg Bridge. 4am, super loud - sounds military..too loud for a news chopper type situation. Any updates on what it's about?
