Sixth Street fire update: 6th Street Kitchen destroyed


EV Grieve reader Jamie shares this photo from this morning's fire on East Sixth Street just east of Avenue A. Several readers say that 6th Street Kitchen, pictured here, has been destroyed.

    Man, I was really wanting to try Kitchen out after the suggestion made by East Village Eats.

    so that explains why there was so much noise this morning - the sirens woke me up! i live on 7th street in between ave a and 1st ave.

    anyway, hopefully there aren't any casualties from the fire...

    So is Eastern Bloc destroyed too? I've been in that place when it's packed and it always struck me as a firetrap when it's that crowded. I pray that everyone is OK. All of these EV fires are extremely unsettling.

    Early reports spotted the fire at 505 E. 6th St. — home of Eastern Bloc. Meanwhile, other readers say the fire started/engulfed 507 and 6th Street Kitchen.

    oh man, that is awful. the owner of this place is a fried of a friend, and we had a number of great meals there. i hope no one was hurt - ugh! i feel so bad!

    I live in 507 - The fire appears to have originated in 6th Street Kitchen, and damage is definitely concentrated in the restaurant. Residents were woken by some explosions and the fire alarm, and escaped via the stairs, fire escapes, or the roof. Smoke damage and damage from fighting the fire is fairly extensive, but only the restaurant itself is destroyed. THANK YOU to the firemen and women who responded so quickly and saved this situation from becoming much worse. We are all very grateful.

    Any reports of suspected arson? All these fires taking place simultaneously at physically unconnected locations can't not bring up that suspicion.

    This sucks. Kitchen is not just a recent newcomer to the village. Owner Chris Genoversa ran OG in the same spot for years and took a lot of time getting its replacement just right. I loved both incarnations and have some very happy memories of great meals and conversations there. Best wishes for a speedy re-opening.

    What a shame about 6th St Kitchen, and a blessing for the building's residents if the damage is as contained as it seems. They had the best deviled eggs, and we loved going there. These fires are unsettling.

    This is awful news. We loved Kitchen during our extended stay in this very block in NYC last year. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Wonderful quiet street. I am so glad the residents and surrounding buildings are safe and hope the owners can rebuild the superior business they ran.

    I was wondering about arson too! the grocery store on 14th, the bank on 2nd ave, the roof on A and houston, and then 2 more businesses in one night! But idk I'm new to the city and I don't know if it is common to have that many fires

    This is so awful! I walked passed 6th St as the fire trucks started rolling in and I was devastated to see it was 6th Street Kitchen in flames. We had just our first meal of 2011 here for Saturday brunch and it was incredible. I've been a huge fan of OG for years and planned to make this another "regular" spot. My prayers are with all of the owners, employees and building residents.
