Thinking about Coyote Ugly (currently shuttered)

As I reported last night, the DOH has shuttered Coyote Ugly on First Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street... I imagine it's only temporary... I'm waiting to hear back from a CU rep...

Coyote Ugly opened in the East Village on Jan. 27, 1993, and spawned a worldwide empire ... and I realized last night that I've only ever been there once (and, oddly enough, I was with my dad...). As much as I like cheap beer and denim shorts, it seemed too fake gritty for my taste... and there is that whole "tourist trap" stereotype associated with the bar... especially after the movie... Maybe I'm wrong? I'll go back.

  1. the one in las vegas is much more grittier or real than this original one. also, oddly enough, the 'new york new york' theme hotel/casino there is also more real than new york city and has the, let's say, character and edge of the nyc 15-20 yrs. ago.

  2. Never been to the CU in LV but the NY,NY in LV is about as "real" and "authetic" of NY (past or present) as the Venetian is to Venice. Then again for those that think those mock-ups amount to anything close to the reality of the place also think that Epcot's European and Asian themed villages are a decent substitute for actually going to those countries. Real chicken flavor is not chicken.

  3. I heard the New York New York casino has been remodeled? Maybe it's edgier now (as edgy as it can be in Vegas, anyway).

I ripped on Coyote Ugly for years but I'd never actually gone into it. Curiosity got the best of me and I went there about 7 months ago. It wasn't as bad as I expected but it wasn't somewhere I'd spend my time, either. The crowd was creepy and not in a good Mars bar kind of way. Just rapey looking dudes and a few random girls.

  4. According to the NYC's health inspection site, Coyote Ugly scored 90 points (a 28 is a C, the lowest letter grade). Their violations, according to the site (they prepare food there?):

  5. ^^ I hope this puts to rest your very mistaken perception that CU's gritty is "fake" gritty. "Blow" flies, that is all.

  6. So the grades are all backwards? To me, a 90 will always be an A-.

  8. Did they swab the bartenders' belly buttons to test for bacteria from Frat Boys doing body shots?
