Thurston Moore curating music for BMW Guggenheim Lab's opening-night party

Work continues over at the BMW Guggenheim Lab on First Street ...

Meanwhile, the Guggenheimers are gearing up for the opening-night reception on Aug. 2, which you're invited to only if you received an invitation. (Yeah, we didn't get one either.)

Here's part of the invite someone who was invited shared with us...

Peter Lawson-Johnston, Honorary Chairman, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation
William L. Mack, Chairman, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation
Jennifer Blei Stockman, President, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation
Richard Armstrong, Director, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation

Harald Krüger, Member of the Board of Management, BMW AG

The BMW Guggenheim Lab Team

request the pleasure of your company for an opening reception of the BMW Guggenheim Lab.

An evening of music curated by Thurston Moore, long-lost footage from TV Party (1978–1982) presented by Glenn O'Brien, and summer fare by Roberta’s.

Street-smart attire.

Space is limited. RSVP essential by XXXXXXX

The BMW Guggenheim Lab is a mobile urban laboratory that will launch in New York City on August 3, 2011, before traveling to Berlin and Asia in a six-year initiative that will explore innovative ideas and designs for city life.

We're not sure if Thurston Moore will actually be there, or if he's just sending along some mix tapes or MP3s or what not for the bash...

Oh, and it opens to the rest of you schlubs on Aug. 3.

  1. Oh great. Now Thurston and Glenn are "part of the master plan to creep into the EV." Just kidding, Anonymous!

But I do actually have one problem with the BMW Guggenheim Lab and this event. And that is the issue of "Street-smart attire." I had to look up on line what that means exactly. Apparently, (assuming I'm invited of course) I would have to show up in either this outfit or this one. With the heat and humidity and all, I should probably opt for the former, but I just don't have the confidence to bring it off. Help!

  4. One of the links to Ken's outfits was broken. I suspect showing up in black with no holes in your clothing is what "street smart attire" means.

The East Vill is ideal for this urban design lab, because it's all about smashing cool stuff down and putting in new ugly crap for rich people. I can't think of anywhere more appropriate, sadly.

  5. Oh, Thurston, how the mighty hath fallen.

Glenn O'Brien left his Warhol cred behind long ago. GQ's "Style Guy" indeed. But Thurston! I expected more from you.

As well he should! Do you have any idea how expensive those sushi dinners at Jewel Bako are?

    @Larry Slade

Thanks for that link. The second to last paragraph really sums it up nicely.

  12. Maybe they figured Larry doesn't have street-smart attire?

  13. Speaking of attire, I kind of love the Bob the Builder clean outfits with matching orange vests (life-vests?), and their little hard hats.
    Ever the crane was brand-spanking-new.

  14. Larry you would make a better Bob the builder than Bob himself. The hammer, the trucks, the little suit and especially the song. 1st Street could use more style.

  15. Turns out I am invited. There was a thing posted on the front door this morning.
They claim I get to go to an exclusive for First St residents something on July 30th. And the opening reception on Aug. 2nd.
I'll be hanging with Thurston and the gang. I'll tell him you all been thinking bout him.
Sorry you guys can't come. Maybe you can get in later when it is open to regular people.
