What was this the summer of?
Well, we're not really into labeling things (too much!) ... as you may recall, somebody dubbed last summer The Summer of Bedbugs hereabouts.
So, what will this summer be remembered for?
The Summer of the Doorshitter?
The Summer of the Discarded Mattress Epidemic?
The Summer of the Walk Man?
Or, of course, The Summer of Giant Chipmunks?
The Summer of Irene?
Oh, or Rats. The Summer of Rats.
We likely know where this one is headed. Vote early and often!

What's all this "was" business? Summer's over?? NooOoooOO!!!! (although I DO love autumn).
ReplyDeleteThis was the summer of red-tailed hawks! Holla at your boy Tommy of Tompkins Square Park and Violet, Bobby, and baby Pip of Washington Square Park!
Where did you find that mattress? And by do I keep missing these things? I know I've said this before, but you really should contribute these to the Bedbug Mattress group on Flickr!

ReplyDeleteTrue! I'm sure we'll have a few more 90-degree days in late September too...
@shmnyc
A reader sent that shot along last summer... I really need to get back on Flickr...
I really wanted this to be The Summer of People Throwing Up on the Cooper Union. But it wasn't meant to be. I don't get it. I'm afraid that was a passing fad, like Tetherball or beauty moles. I'm out there every day. Still. Waiting. Watching.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Roger_Paw. It's still summer, except now with NYU kids, Kim Kardashian, and finally some decent tomatoes 'n corn.
ReplyDeleteThematically, though, Summer of Rats seems like the most overarching so far.
it was the summer of woooo-woooers. oh, wait, that's every weekend
ReplyDeletethe summer of tossing out christmas trees. gruber can attest to that
the summer of not thinking at the guggenheim lab
it was an artisanal summer
This survey tool sucks. You can't vote more than once on the same browser! Was going to organize a last-minute push for The Summer of the Giant Chipmunk.
ReplyDeleteOh well. At least I have the potential to earn $5 cash NOW!
I know the end of summer is nearing when I hear loud, obnoxious people moving into the building and I realize "Oh Crap! It's September 1st already?!".
ReplyDeleteI voted for the chipmunk, I was always a fan of Alvin. And I agree with esquared, what about The Summer of Gruber MacDougal? After all, that rotten son of a bitch has to finally announce the winner and prize next week after Labor Day, right?
ReplyDeleteThis was the summer Mars Bar actually closed.

ReplyDeleteYes. I was going to discuss that separately.
The summer of ET!
ReplyDeleteRats...the rats always win.
Summer of the rats? Isn't that every year :)
ReplyDeleteI thought it was the summer of "oh god, too much new ice cream to choose from"
