It’s hard to believe that Empire Biscuit didn’t make the list. The Biscuit Boys literally provided more hours of entertainment than any other story on EV Grieve because it was such a soap opera that somehow incredibly lasted two years. From their Kickstarter fundraising campaign which sold high fives to their long delayed grand opening, to the overhyped PR that proclaimed them the next big thing the minute they opened, which was immediately followed by constant unplanned closures as they tried to figure out how to actually operate a 24 hour food establishment, the backlash against their brotastic “Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner Drunk” tagline, the long lines of foodies looking for their next fix which just as quickly disappeared, the biscuit bouncers, the artisanal jams, the tiny sandwiches with precious names, to the final “peelin’ potatoes” sign which became their own personal sign of the apocalypse, it was the gift that kept on giving.
ReplyDeleteFor me, the shitshow that was the latter half of this past decade will forever be symbolized by the rise and fall of the Empire Biscuit empire: a flash in the pan, underfunded, overhyped social media driven business catering to the Brodeo Drive crowd which was destined to collapse under the tremendous weight of It’s own self delusion and too many broken promises. On that note, Happy New Year everybody, and here’s hoping the 20’s reverse some of the negative trends we have been seeing of late, and are a time of progress and renewal.
Never underestimate the power of boobs.
