19-23 St. Mark's Place sells for $34 million

UBS Realty Investors is the new owner of 19-23 St. Mark's Place, the 8-story retail-residential complex between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Cape Advisors sold the property for $34 million, according to @TradedNY.

The building features 41 residential units, five retail spaces and a sidewalk bridge dating back at least five years.

Most recently, Teso Life, a Japanese variety store, signed a lease for the former St. Mark's Market, which closed here this past October after 16 years in business. A restaurant called CheLi is in the works for the upper retail level.

The address has a long history. As Off the Grid noted:

The buildings at 19-23 St. Mark’s Place are an excellent example of how the East Village has changed over time from a wealthy merchants neighborhood to a landing spot for immigrants, to the launch pad for numerous counterculture and artistic movements. Where else would one find a building which had been townhouses for wealthy families, a ballroom, a gangster hangout, a Polish wedding chapel, and a performance venue with the Velvet Underground as the house band?

In the early 2000s, a developer gutted the space, added a new façade as well as a few floors that look as if they blew in from the Hamptons. The developer also created the mall-friendly retail spaces, whose tenants have included a Chipotle and CBGB gift shop.

The building also features the $18,000-per-month unit, which Daniel Craig was said to be renting at one point.

  1. If you are old enough, like me, you will remember going to the Electric Circus in this building back in the '60's when life was really fun and carefree.

  2. Helen Mirren moved out of the building in 2015. She was pictured at Stogo.

    Anyone know when the sidewalk bridge will come down? These bridges reduce sidewalk traffic for small businesses.
    Speaking of sidewalk bridges, there is also one at the corner of 9th St. and 2nd Ave. that has been there a long time.

  3. The Shelter & Coney Island High... Two dark, grimy and awesome night clubs were in that space. What St Marks really was in the early 90's.

    Coney Island High wasn't in that building. It was a few doors to the left. Building was demolished, and now it's that building with the balconies....

  6. I believe Helen Mirren and her husband Taylor Hackford did live here for awhile.

    Also, to a previous comment, Coney Island High was at 15 St. Mark's Place.

  7. The top floor is a elevator keyed condo owned by Helen Mirran. (At least as of about 6 years ago). The rest are rentals. Daniel Craig did rent from her with Rachel Weitz. I rode the elevator literally 2 or 3 times with him over a 3 year period when I lived in the building. Rachel W several times as well. She used to walk her kid to a preschool over by where New York film academy was.

  9. The building goes deep and is really a lot of square footage - so 41 apts sounds right. The apartments are unique and cool- totally loft spaces. The last mosh pit years of my life were at Coney island High. What fun! And I knew the Helen Mirren thing. I didn't know Daniel Craig and Rachel were living there. I knew they looked at a place in my neighborhood at 4th and B. It seems like he should have gotten more money for that huge space and nice modern building. The apartments were always rented.
