Matthew Kenney changing up concepts on 2nd Avenue and 4th Street

Plant-based celebrity chef Matthew Kenney is changing up concepts again at 67 Second Ave. at Fourth Street, where Sestina, a pasta bar, is opening later this summer, per its website (thanks to Vinny & O for the photos!)...

And they already have an Eventbrite page for the Sestina Thanksgiving dinner.

This marks the fourth Kenney concept here in the past few years, following Plantmade, Plant Food + Wine and Arata.

There was also a revolving door of restaurants here before Kenney took over. La Contrada ... Contrada (not to be confused with La Contrada) ... Calliope and Belcourt all came and went since 2012.

  1. I've never gone to any of his restaurants, but this seems a reach. IMO it's a bad sign (with a side order of hubris) when "name" brand "chefs" are advertising they're coming to the area.

  2. anyone remember the Italian restaurant that was sister restaurant to Cucina di Pesce that was there in the 80’s but long closed?

  3. I am in full support of local businesses in our communities. They tend to thrive and contribute to our daily lives as we in turn offer them sustainability with our patronage. Is opening a new restaurant during this financially turbulent period against a creeping pandemic worth it? I just read a rather discouraging article this morning in the NY Post which states 83% of all NYC restaurants are unable to pay the current rent let alone the months of back rent when nothing was open. It is heartbreaking to witness the demise of many wonderful, beloved spots in our hood which will never return. I imagine this restauranteur/entrepreneur has adequate resources to withstand the duration of limited seating outdoors until indoor seating is permitted and/ or when a vaccine is readily available. Good luck to this corner with yet another dining concept.

  4. Yes Ronnie I remember that great Italian restaurant it was called Frutti di Mare and I used to go there with my family all the time. I remember it had good sized portions and great tasting food.
