Fundraiser launched for man seriously injured in 9th Street fall

On the morning of Sept. 26, we received multiple reports from readers about a man who fell from a fire escape outside a building on the north side of Ninth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

A person familiar with the situation said that the man had been visiting his daughter, who lives in the building. The father remains in the hospital with serious injuries and is expected to be in recovery and rehab for an extended period.

We just learned that there is a fundraiser for him. From GoFundMe:
My dad, Jim, was involved in a horrible freak accident on the morning of September 26, 2025. He fell a high three-stories off of a fire escape while on a trip visiting my sister in NYC. He is currently in the ICU in critical condition with extensive injuries ... None of his family, except for my sister, lives in New York, so not only are we going to have to worry about medical expenses, but also traveling expenses for his family to come help him during his difficult recovery.

We appreciate any help and good energy towards my dad's healing.

The picture shows 1cop car and 2 LEOs. In fact when I looked out my window the injured man had already been transported to a hospital in the ambulance BUT there were at least 10+ LEOs and half again as many cop cars parked in the street. They hung around in small groups seemingly doing nothing but talking "amongst" themselves for nearly an hour.
A neighbor told me there was a bloody towel & a bloodstain on the sidewalk. Maybe they were guarding them.
I am very sorry for the family and the injured man.

So sad. Has anyone heard if it was an issue with the fire escape breaking or was it an accident on his part? Genuinely asking — so many fire escapes are not maintained.

Sending thoughts to the family. May he make a full recovery.

It's relatively young (possibly in the late 70s?). I'm in the next building over (built 1884). 307 East 9 originally had a single fire escape in the rear. When they subdivided it into 2 apt./floor, the landlord needed to add an additional fire escape for the new front apartments. Instead of a new one, they extended our front fire escape west to enable access to our front fire escape from 307. Ours is the old style (original?) one & you can see the division between old & new if you look up. Ours is the decorative one and 307 East is plain Jane. It's sturdy and has been pretty well maintained though it could use a good scraping & new paint.
I've been on our fire escape many, many times from my spry youth to my creaky old age without incident. I still cannot wrap my head around how one falls from it. Truly a freak accident.

Addendum: I know all this as I have lived in my apt. for 50+ years (One of the benefits of rent regulated housing. I'm sure our current management co. hopes for my eventual demise, sooner rather than later.) When the new one was added they drilled holes thru our walls to bolt the new fire escape to the building. I can show you the bolts in the living room wall.
