Another Key Food is coming to the East Village

A new Key Food is taking shape at 119 Avenue D between Eighth Street and Ninth Street. 

The market is taking over the former South Shore Farms space — some of that supermarket's branding is still visible inside — and the operators are hoping to open in about a month.

And for anyone wondering whether this means a second edition of the beloved Key Food at 52 Avenue A: not quite.

"It is not affiliated with us, unfortunately, so I don't think you’ll have quite the same musical flair," a source at the Avenue A Key told us. 

Key Food operates as a cooperative, with independently owned stores that are shareholders and purchase from the same supplier. 

"There will obviously be overlap on items, but not the same assortment or pricing," our Key source said. "Those decisions are up to each operator."

The Avenue A store was also unaware that another Key Food was coming just a few avenues east.

So maybe don't hold your breath for endless Keebler Export cracker tins, 25-pound sacks of bird seed and family packs of Sea Salt & Pepper SkinnyPop.
