Cereal killer: Kellogg's NYC Café shutters on Union Square`

[TT Tiger pic via Instagram]

The Kellogg's NYC Café opened on the northern section of Union Square in December 2017, an event that inspired far too many posts on some local blogs.

Now an EVG reader alerts us that the space on the second level of 31 E. 17th St. (above the AT&T store) — which offered a DIY cereal-creation station as well as Pop Tarts — closed last week.

The announcement came via Instagram...

  1. It warms my heart to see lame corporate attempts at being cool, fail miserably. I think ultimately the tourist who this place was aimed at didn't appreciate having to climb a flight of stairs.

  2. The fact that they were #cashless always put me off. Take note, @kelloggsnyc.

  3. I ate this stuff as a kid. It's manufactured garbage. Just say no to sugar--the Big S.

  5. I'm glad I never noticed this store on the street, glad it is gone before I noticed it polluting my environment.

  6. I can't believe it lasted this long; Kellogg's must have been losing money hand over fist subsidizing this place.

I never had even the tiniest interest in going there, thus I was blissfully unaware of both the staircase and the no-cash policy. (But had I climbed the stairs only to discover a no-cash policy, I'd have been plenty pissed off!)

  8. My office is across the street and seeing that glaring orange sign, completely incongruous on that building, was painful multiple times a day. So glad it will finally be gone!!

  9. don't they own Union Square Play , or at least are somehow affiliated? it's on 18th st in the back of the same building as Kellogg's. hopefully that place stays open - great space for kids to play , take music class, etc.

  11. I haven't touched a product of theirs since I discovered the history and views of Kellogg himself .. this was one I was hoping would go down in flames. They certainly don't need the money.

  12. When they opened I was tempted to poke fun at them too, especially when they put hammocks in the windows. But they hosted a Girl Scout cookie sale for a troop of scouts who were homeless and lived in city shelters and had no venue for their cookie sales. The event was on TV news and there was a long line down the street to get in. The girls knocked it out of the ballpark, far exceeding their sales goals. OK Kellogg's is the same company that makes the Girl Scout cookies, so what, they were there for the girls, that is something that is commendable.
