As you likely noticed (or felt), city crews milled Second Avenue from 14th Street to Houston this past week.
Crews also milled Third Avenue between 12th Street and Houston a move that likely makes sense to someone.
These East Village avenues are not on the coming week's Milling and Resurfacing Schedule at the DOT.
As we've seen, it usually takes several weeks before the milled streets are repaved. 🙏

Obviously, these need to be done but how can the City traditionally leave it like this for weeks before paving????
I would not mind if the city stripped the streets down to the original Belgian bricks!

One explanation often given is that when a street is milled, the City gives utilities like Con Edison, Verizon, Spectrum, etc. some time to go the area and examine and repair their underground pipes and cables before the paving is done.
Which doesn't mean that the whole process could be better managed, but that's at least one rationale.
They should have been a hold on all repaving until November when all the sheds have to be legally removed
If anything, utilities end up digging up fresh streets somehow like a week after they're paved lol
And on Tuesday, innumerable "but we're the good ones" bike riders decided they had total permission to ride on the sidewalks. When I directed one coming at me on the sidewalk to the street, he yelled "too bumpy' & stayed on the sidewalk swerving around me. Another came from behind & almost took me out had I paused or leaned to my left.
The alternative is send people riding into a deadly situation. So let’s share for a few weeks and no one will die.
I hope they give the utility companies enough time for access to do their thing. Silly for anyone to access a newly paved rode. And yes a lot of cyclist were caught off guard with this road repair most rode onto the sidewalk, while other rode on the street. Those that rode on the street didn’t care about the bikes because the were Citibikes.

My favorite time of year...after all the streets are milled and you are just beginning to believe the hellscape will last forever, the paving gets done overnight and you awake to a beautiful morning of fresh smooth streets.
It will be a glorious day when Water Street gets fixed.
It is reckless to drive Citi Bikes, Door-Dashing e-bikes, scooters and mopeds on the crowded sidewalks. I was walking my dog the other evening and had three bikes come up from behind me on the sidewalk, one them nearly missing my dog.
Get over yourself. Those people are mad annoying but the street is fucked up, so share, unless they're riding like a maniac.

I'm a septuagenarian pedestrian recovering from knee surgery. I spend my outdoor time avoiding delivery bikes going every which way including on the sidewalk, cars that do not use turn signals and/or run lights, bike riders who stop & block the crosswalks, catching buses in the middle of the street because the bus stop is blocked with cars and trucks, dodging millennials who face is buried in their phone. If you wish to bike on the sideWALK, get off you bike and walk it. If the street is too bumpy, find another street or maybe go SLOWLY. Stay off the sidewalks.
