Tree down on 12th Street

We received several reader reports of a downed tree this morning on the north side of 12th Street just west of Second Avenue...
Our tipsters arrived after the tree was down. It's possible that the truck neatly parked in the bike lane, and the tree just happened to uproot and fall over on its own. (Of course, we've had our share, like here and here, of truck-tree collisions. The trucks always win.)

Here's a screen grab from a reader video...
Tree aside, there weren't any reports of injuries. According to the NYC Tree Map, this was a Callery pear

William Klayer notes that 12th Street between Third Avenue and Second Avenue is closed to traffic... while workers remove the downed tree...

That is a shame to lose another nice tree like that because of some careless truck driver who is looks like went right up on the curb and knocked the tree right over and probably could not care less about it.

It's arboricide. https://www.etymonline.com/word/arboricide

I think the truck may have hit a low branch causing the tree to fall because the truck and a police car was still there as of this evening.

Worst part is that this tree will be replaced by a pathetic twig of a sapling that will itself be dead three months after it goes in the ground.

It is a policy choice not to designate loading zones across the street, on the south side and instead dedicate all the public spaces for people to store their private vehicles for free instead.

I don’t drive but it seems to me that everyone who who is purchasing instant gratification ecommerce is contributing to vehicles on the streets.

Call or enail the Parks & Rec Dept. They have jurisdiction over street trees.

For what it’s worth, they replaced the tree on the NE corner of 12&3 this past spring and it’s looking healthy. Fingers crossed for it through the winter and for a quick replacement of the downed one.

Store? It's public parking, not a storage facility.
