Grief surrounded approximately 150 people who showed up Saturday night for a candlelight vigil on behalf of Daria Serkov, the 15-year-old who was struck and killed by a commercial garbage truck Friday night on the corner of 14th Street and 1st Avenue.
Serkov, a resident in Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village, had many shell-shocked friends and acquaintances who came out to be amongst the community in their time of loss.
"A young woman has lost her life, and another one is fighting to stay alive. You see the grief on the faces of so many kids here," stated Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal. "One of the most heartbreaking things I've ever witnessed."
Walking amongst the young adults with shock on their faces, one can only wonder about the long-term psychological trauma this tragic event has brought forth.
Daria, 15, died Friday night after a commercial truck struck the Citi Bike on which she was a passenger at 14th Street and First Avenue; the 16-year-old who was operating the bike was also injured. Daria, who attended New York City Museum School, leaves behind her parents, Irina and Alex Serkov, and her twin sister, Greta.
A family friend established a fundraiser to help the Serkovs with funeral and related expenses.
