Dorian Grey Gallery space is for rent on 9th Street

The now-empty gallery space is on the market here on Ninth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue...

The asking rent is $7,900.

Gallery rep Molua Muldown told us last month that they were unable to come to terms on a lease with the new landlord (Benchmark Real Estate Group). Dorian Gray has a pop-up gallery space in Watermill for the summer.

The gallery, which focuses on street art/graffiti and the pioneers of the 1980s New York art scene, is leaving their East Ninth Street space after six years.

There's a send-off event this Wednesday...



Back in March, we heard that the gallery was on a month-to-month lease after Benchmark Real Estate Group became the landlord of No. 437 here between Avenue A and First Avenue. And now they are closing. There was discussion on Facebook that the asking rent more than doubled.

Gallery rep Molua Muldown responded graciously about the closure.

"We're terribly sorry we weren't able to come to an agreement with the new building owner," she said via email.

Perhaps the gallery will look elsewhere for a space in the East Village?

"We've not yet decided what the next chapter will be," she said. "We have a pop up gallery in Watermill for the summer and will gather our thoughts about the future in the autumn."

Give me 'Liberty:' New mural on East 9th Street honors Tompkins Square Park

Throughout the week, we've been watching a new mural go up on the side of Doc Holliday's on Avenue A and East Ninth Street... Bobby Williams has been keeping tabs on the progress...







... the mural is now complete...



What's it all about? Per a tipster:

A gift from Dorian Grey Gallery [on East 9th Street] and UK street artist STIK to the neighborhood. The mural is titled "Liberty" in honor of the history of Tompkins Square Park.
