It's no longer always Friday: TGI Friday's has closed on Union Square

The TGI Friday's at 34 Union Square East at 16th Street shut down at the end of the year... EVG regular Daniel shared these photos ...



This closure was a long time coming. The Commercial Observer reported in August 2014 that this location, which was just breaking even, would soon close.

Dennis Riese, the chairman of the board and CEO of The Riese Organization, reportedly bought this building for $15.3 million at the end of 2009. The TGI Friday's opened in June 2010.

Now it looks as if the whole building is for sale as a development site... curious to see what, if any, air rights might be available...



Didn't spot a listing for the property just yet.



Meanwhile, patrons yearning for TGI's Sesame Jack™ Chicken Strips or Jack Daniel's® Chicken Sandwich washed down with a Red Bull Passion Slush can find that fare at the six other remaining locations in the city.

Report: T.G.I. Friday's is closing on Union Square

The space at 34 Union Square East and 16th Street has been on the market for months.

Now The Commercial Observer reports that this location will soon close.

Dennis Riese, the chairman of the board and CEO of The Riese Organization, which owns the license for Fridays in Manhattan, said, "Union Square is so hot down there these days with real quality restaurants it just doesn't compete well."

Those of you who yearn for T.G.I.'s Sesame Jack™ Chicken Strips or Jack Daniel's® Chicken & Shrimp can find that fare at the eight other locations in the city. Riese is also mulling opening a outpost in Murray Hill.

Sad news to report for fans of T.G.I. Friday's Sesame Jack™ Chicken Strips, Jack Daniel's® Chicken & Shrimp, and Bacon Mac & Cheese Bites ... the national chain's Union Square location is for lease... the space has been on the market for several months, apparently... the rent is currently "negotiable."

Per the listing:

Retail/Restaurant space available at 34 Union Square East. Located on the Southeast corner of 16th Street. Frontage is 140 ft wraparound. Ground and second floors can be leased seperately. Can create ground floor entrance on 16th Street and combine with the second floor. Currently TGI Friday's.

The restaurant remains open for now. And this is just the latest T.G.I. Friday's to likely close in the city. The location on Eighth Avenue — one of like 23 TGIFs in Midtown — is expected to close early next year.
