[Updated, three's company] And then there were two (porta-potties in Tompkins Square Park)

Workers yesterday removed the three porta-potties in Tompkins Square Park and replaced them with two similar (and cleaner) models.

The triplex (only open during the day as long as someone has a key) arrived on April 1, providing the first non-open-air makeshift toilet opp since the city carted off the previous commodes on Jan. 9

Perhaps the Parks Department plans on switching out the toilets every month as Tompkins is getting busier with the arrival of warm weather. The first portaloos were battered from heavy use (and/or vandalism). At the time, sources told us that the previous port-o-johns were constantly trashed and not really the most fun things to use. So, the thinking was, Why replace them with more only to meet the same fate?

As previously reported, the restrooms in the Tompkins Square Park field house are now closed as part of an 18-month renovation that's nearing the one-year mark.

OK then! Loo No. 3 was dropped off this morning...

The porta-potties of Tompkins Square Park now have hours of operation

Photos by Steven

Heads up: If you need to use the facilities in Tompkins Square Park today, you must do it by 3:30 p.m.

Today, signs on the toilet triplex note a 3:30 p.m. closing time (with an apology)...
We do not know if this is just for today or every day moving forward.

The portable pots arrived here on Monday, providing the first makeshift, non-open-air toilet opp since the city carted off the previous commodes.

Over the past week, it's been a challenge to predict when the facilities might be accessible. For instance, a few days ago, the water closets were locked at 5 p.m. Yesterday, they remained closed all day due to the absence of the key holder, as confirmed by a Parks worker.

New amenity alert

Unless this is some new public art. (In that case, thank you Amanda Burden-Christ!)

Toilet abandoned merely for having a cracked seat

East Third Street near Avenue A...

Couldn't this have been rehabbed and put back into use...?

Or else turned into a decorative planter or glassware for a specialty cocktail...?

If you're going to use Seventh Street as a toilet, then you might as well be civil about it

EV Grieve reader Elizabeth Frayer of New York Natives spotted this addition to Seventh Street just steps away from McSorley's ... perhaps a hint from fed-up neighbors... Or else Bloomberg's pay-public toilet idea has come to this...

More subtle, perhaps, than the no vomiting sign Jeremiah spotted in the spring.

No. 2 to go

Back on June 1 (or 47 inches of rain ago), I mentioned that a new thai place was coming to 347 E. 14th St. (near First Avenue), the site of the former Mambo Italiano Pizzeria (AKA, the sad pizza place). Well, work continues there...

I just hope that they move the restroom — or at least invest in a bathroom door.
