Seriously, it would be depressing if someone could put up a building size art work in public space in this neighborhood ("edgy" circa 1979) and not have it get messed up. Does anyone really expect this not to occur? And why would that be a good thing?
I like evolution of art as much of the next guy, but taggers are some lazy uncreative sorts these days. That's just ugly. Use a color. Draw a picture. Have an idea that isn't the bubbleletter tag that's been done thirteen thousand times a second since 1979.
Grieve, you're usually so on top of what's happening in graffiti, this is a couple days old. I'm surprised Bobby Williams hasn't sent in a couple of pics of Joe Strummer's green lapels (since Monday) courtesy of "laroc" or the new (post-xmas) mural on the 2nd & A Chase bank.
I happened to see "laroc" in action as I was walking by, a 5ft-6in stocky guy in a bulky beige coat who's suddenly leaving his mark all over these days. Personally, I'm pissed, cuz the E-ville is NOT his, no matter how many places he leaves his name.
Kenny Scharf was a graffiti artist back in the day--yup--he would paint and tag--so now that he has recognition-he opposes those who are following in his footsteps. Maybe the bombers should ask him first..but that is how he started out.
Kenny never defaced other writers work. Writers / artists banded together and supported one another back then. You obviously weren't around; read a fuckin' book.

Security guards, security cameras.. all for naught.
Improvement.

I will break down and weep tears of joy the day that hating/haters/"haters gonna hate" finally disappears from the popular lexicon.
