Workers have removed the paper from the coming-soon Veselka Bowery location on East First Street, offering a glimpse of the work-in-progress inside...
Veselka owner Tom Birchard told Fork in the Road on March 7 that the place here should be ready in late May or early June. Mid-June seems more likely now...

Just depressing. "A little less dinerish & a little more restauranty", the sidewalk tables, the caviar, the "sleek" look of the place. Yes, I still had a soft spot in my heart for Veselka, just because of memories. Eating kasha varnishkes with Stefan Sharff, a great Polish family friend, film maker emigre & trickster extraordinaire! This is another Veselka entirely. Sad.
Huh? I'd guess that's the raw space, more or less. Once it get's Veselkaed, it should be fine. Veselka has always had nice design--the walls, the whatshisname paintings, the menus, the meatball plates, the Valentine's day candy, and so on. I'm sure they'll do a nice job with the new place. I'm okay with "less dinerish & a little more restauranty" given the location and all. Why build a diner when you are a restaurant? The old counter is great--and interacting with the staff at the counter is one of the things that makes and keeps the 9th St. Vesulka great--but, unless they have something up their sleeve, I doubt the new place will do as much lunch business as they do evening and late night.
I wish them the best and I have faith they will do a little better job than they did with the kiosk--which wasn't bad but wasn't as good as the Brazilian-French place there before.
I do worry about them getting the menu right, given the rather different crowd surrounding the new place. They don't always promot their strengths as well as they should.
