Crew members filming Tom Hanks movie 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' were extremely loud and incredibly close

We received all sorts of WTF reports yesterday afternoon about a low-flying helicopter hovering over parts of the East Village ... specifically Avenue A and East Fourth Street...

And jdx also shot his own film of the filming...

Several readers said the helicopter was filming scenes for a TV show or movie ... Meanwhile, a few other readers said it was for the upcoming movie, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," a 9/11-related film starring Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and John Goodman, among many others. The movie is based on the 2005 novel by Jonathan Safran Foer. Here's a confirmation tweet from a very credible source.

I wondered what this was- a mysterious black helicopter with no visible, from the ground, identifying marks- looking very military like with all the external equipment- and flying very low- close to building tops. I took several photos- if this is for a movie it violates our air space, comfort zone, as well as, quality of life. Remember a good number of soldiers killed in the different wars America is fighting happen when helicopters have mechanical problems and go down. Just imagine? What is the point? To make a movie that costs $12 to go to- and we get nothing out of them invading and violating our space? thanks clayton

I figured it was a film photographer filming for some travel and tourism site.

It flew awfully close to One Fifth Avenue where Bobby, the red-tailed hawk, was perched.

I was so proud to see Bobby unmoved by the extremely close fly-by.

There were several people on 1st Ave with radios that were broadcasting the helicopter communication. After talking to one, I noticed many people on the street with the radios - I almost thought there was some undercover thing going on.
