Eater noted the great news/awful news for Heartbreak, the Germanic-themed restaurant on Second Avenue and Second Street ... they were included in the recently unveiled
Michelin New York restaurant guide this year ... Unfortunately, as Eater also reported yesterday, Heartbreak is currently "closed for renovations." So they won't be able to immediately take advantage of the Michelin windfall...

Older EV residents should know that Heartbreak is run by the same woman (Ingrid Roettele) who formerly owned "Roettele AG" on East 7th Street between First & A.
They used to be in a small, apartment-like setting serving terrific German - Alsatian and Swiss food. A very hard to find combination in NYC these days. I'm surprised they don't draw a larger crowd at their new location, as the quality and style of cooking is as good as ever.
The name and ambience puts me off, it appears to be a date house for the moron set - maybe I'll give it a try on a weeknight.
I have always felt bad for this place. Always hear great reviews, they seem to be into it, and authentic, and they certainly put a lot of work into their renovation. Granted that reno makes it look like Tonic South, but I guess you have to get past that, and actually walk in. I have heard its pretty relaxed once the tractor beams pull you in.
Hopefully this star drums up some business for them. I will have to give it a shot some time soon.

Exactly. I always have wrote it off because of this.
thanks for the info uncle waltie!
I really wanted to like this place, cuz it's so close to me, but it's clearly priced for tourists. I might try it for a special occastion, birthday, etc., but it's not an affordable place for local's regular dining.
Bowery Boy, I agree with you as far as prices are concerned. I can only afford to go there for special occasions. But I always felt it was money well spent when I did go.
Right there with the "grump".
It's too bad, because I really miss Roettele AG. But that was then; this is now.
They were trying to get a full liquor license at the last community board meeting and were denied because of the circumstances of the tenants in the building and previous agreements made. They did say that if they didn't get it they thought they would have to shut down, so I have a feeling they won't be reopening with the same theme.
That said, I'd heard their food was terrific, but I never went in as the prices were just this side of too high, so it was more of a place where you plan to go for a special reason rather than just popping in for a bite before a film at Anthology across the street.
