i have seen smaller hawks hunt squirrels by hovering at the trunk of a tree, trying to catch the squirrel as it moves along the trunk. invariably, the skwirul goes to the other side from the hawk and then gets away.
I would like to congratulate that squirrel for successfully evading the hawk. That was a close encounter, and a less dexterous squirrel wouldn't have made it out alive.
