Becker and Picard are heavy nightlife/hotspot restauranteurs with names like Lafayette, Miss Lilys, the revamped Joe's Pub and The Dutch among their credits.
Here's a passage from a feature on Becker from the Times in 2011:
After three decades of designing many of downtown’s most distinctive hot spots, Mr. Becker has earned a reputation as a night life impresario whose presence assures an attractive clientele and discerning doormen. The Box is a nightclub that mixed bottle service with burlesque. La Esquina is a taco stand that propelled the speakeasy trend (there’s a “secret” Mexican restaurant underground) to absurd heights. Before that, there were the Bowery Bar, Fez, M.K. and Area. His latest project, Miss Lily’s, is a Jamaican restaurant on West Houston Street with hosts whose job often involves shepherding patrons elsewhere.
A tipster told us back in November that 7A would become a southern-themed restaurant.

FUCK.
I want a purge of Serge.

Fried everything? No thanks.
In other words, I will no longer be able to afford to eat at 7A.
It's finally getting warmer, and now you're forecasting a Douche Vortex?
Serge "the surge" Becker will do for the East Viage what he did for TriBeCa and Soho, turn it into one giant velvet rope zone with bouncers and overhyped "secret" entrances and theme-park decor and food I remember MKs and how totally pretentious it and the crowd were, and Area was just a zoo. Hopefully he's old enough now not to repeat those kinds of mistakes.
That location is within 500 feet of 23 other businesses with an on-premise liquor license. The potential new lessors should expect there will be strong opposition to them getting a liquor license. I will be certainly voting no.
By the way pinhead, it is only January 8th, but I think you already have a nomination for comment of the year in the bag! :)
I have to be honest, as a professional chef and long time neighborhood resident, I've never been impressed with 7A. That being said, I have gotten used too it. I feel sad for the people who work there and sad for those who love it. Folks our nabe is gone!!!
As long as the same ole people are the only ones to show up at the CB3 meetings and SLA hearings when these sorts of guys present their lies, they will continue to win, open expensive clubs, and change the neighborhood into a place we can't afford to eat out in any more. As they say, success goes to those who show up.
I hope they transform it to a club whose hostesses bring you food from the former establishment with the same owner.
Where can I pick up a Serge protector?
remember when the free jazz community teamed up to get rid of the University of the Streets upstairs...
The east village need another fucking "southern" food place like Tompkins need more rats. 8 years ago you couldn't throw a stone with out hitting an Italian restaurant. This year is Southern or comfort food. I really need to find a new Herd.
7A sucked. Sorry guys....
Not mourning that one. Last meal I had there I got violently ill.....
I am sorry folks are out of work though...
The Becker feature sounded just like a Stephan parody on SNL. Cracked me up. And then I cried.
Valkyries, dressed in black, wireless ear pieces in place, holding the dreaded “Guest List” behind the velvet rope. I guess this is coming to 7A. Didn’t Superdive have a velvet rope as well? Like Yah!
Well, this just makes me miss Jewels even more...
The last meal we had at 7A was terrific, cause it was a simple one -- veg burgers and fries. Why a sudden death to things simple in favor of all this boozed up hype? Wait, don't answer that.
Would def like to show up to a meeting and oppose this nonsense. This dude sounds awful.. talk about something sticking out like a sore thumb
Awesome! Change is sometimes good and this place will be a positive addition to an already great area.....Hope it's true!
Change is sometimes good? Righto.
great...another overpriced, upscale bar. Just what the EV needs so it can look and be like LES, Soho, Meatpacking where all the annoying people flock for bottle service.
Bottle service shouldn't even exist in the village.
Pickard and Becker are also taking over Peels for a casual Italian. Just like Gemma a block away.
I live across the street. Ate there once in awhile, but it always seemed a little dirty inside. Hope for an improvement, but suspect something that's just expensive and bland will replace 7A.
