Unbelievable. We're living in a ticking time bomb, it seems. DNAInfo reports that the contractor who was doing work there was just indicted last month in the DOB/HPD bribery scandal: http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20150327/east-village/contractor-who-survived-blast-tells-dnainfo-debris-was-on-top-of-me
Hiring sketchy and/or unlicensed people to do work seems to be so common. I fought my EV landlord for doing just that, and for doing major work without permits, to no avail. So frustrating and truly dangerous. It will be interesting to find out what the investigators find in this tragedy.
Thank you, Grieve, for your continuing efforts to inform, and to the posters who share their photos and info with the rest of us. I will be going over the PS 3 tonight to offer a free room for a while if any of the displaced are interested, just don't know what else to do.
Holy shit. This makes me ill. I feel so bad for those directly affected by this tragedy. I live on 7th, have lived here since 2010, and will miss this block, as I pass by it to work each day. You just never know what the next day will bring. Hope the injured and displaced are okay. This will be a huge loss for this community. I can't imagine a big hole being there.
Heartbroken. Thinking of all my old neighbors, shop owners and all those affected by this terrible tragedy. Was an EV resident for 35 years until we were forced to move 7 years ago. It's criminal that the negligence and greed that is pervasive throughout the city is responsible for causing this disaster.
