Per the article:
"As females walk by these bastards jump out and scare 'em," Costanza said. "It's quite a sight."
And!
The Daily Newser counted at least 10 rats swarming in close proximity, including one "cat-sized" rodent.
He also took a photo of the rats perched inside the hubcap of a Honda.
Head to the Daily News here if you'd like to see photos AND video of this.

Costanza and Daily News talking about bros or rats? Then again, what's the difference?
Time to install an NYPD patrol tower!
Maybe they can put that Skywatch tower on that corner for a few days?
someone from the Daily News must be invested in EV real estate
Sounds like a developer wants the city to sell the land Drydock and the basketball courts are on so he can develop the new mixed-use building called "East Village East". Only in the East Village today!
In 2010 Bloomberg cut the City's pest control stuff by something like 75%. But of course, it's a complete failure of the deBlasio administration. No wonder the pest control agents turn their backs on the mayor.
@Anon. 11:40 - that's an insult to rats!
City HEY BABY! attacked by rats.
Mud dumps whitish water (half water half milk?) in the street every night. I've been observing this for years (I live a few doors east). If any of their customers sees this please ask them to stop. They've created a huge rat problem on the north side of the block (that doesn't exist on the south side). I personally think the rats are quite cute - and it really is hilarious when I witness drunk girls on 4" heels shrieking at the sight of them... but the rats are getting pretty aggressive and fight with each other a lot. Time to stop using the street as an open sewer.
Were those females living or coming from or going to 277 E. Seventh St or The Adele? Did they not take the shuttle that the latter offers. Or ride that alternate mode of public transportation thst is great for the environment, green washing machine, just like that shirtless hipster bro riding in the former's ad?
Sam is a sweetie. A man with a colorful history! I worked with him at the Daily News. Hell ov a guy!
But the rats keep the junkies away so I say let them stay!

- "females" meaning female rats, or women? That is unclear to me.
I recommend introducing foxes into the East Village, to control rats. By "foxes," I do not mean "sexy women," I mean, "Vulpes vulpes."
Not nearly as scary as guinea pigs, in my opinion.
the rats make good food for the hawks.
I don't think most of the posted comments are clever or funny. Just macho. The boldness of the rats and their huge increase, on and around Avenue D, ought to be taken seriously. At 6:45AM today, I was walking my two small dogs on the north west corner of Ave D and 7th St, when four rats casually crossed the sidewalk in front of us. They were in and out of a
bag of garbage, taking cover under the mom and pop pharmacy and into the sewer. Several people have told me that rats had chewed the wires in their car engines. Not amusing at all.
Anon 3:21 - Wait, are you saying the Mud Coffee truck dumps food waste on the corner of Avenue D and 10th street every night? If so, is there any video or photo evidence, because if there isn't there should be. That's not right.
10:04 pm, thank you Jean-Baptiste Clemence.
The rats were here first. Would you move if you had those low rents?
