According to Ekya, a sanitation truck was traveling north in the bike lane, emptying the garbage cans along the west side of First Avenue on Tuesday night around 11.
"It must have got tangled in the branches because as it drove off it pulled the tree along with it," Ekya said. "That was a gorgeous tree and we're hoping the city can put it back and not have to tear it out."
Unfortunately, before the day really got started yesterday and Ekya arrived at the restaurant, the city already had the tree removed.

The city is removing more trees than putting in new ones. There are so many empty tree pits in the neighborhood.

We've lost at least 5 mature trees to trucks on our street over the years. :(

Sanitation - the biggest hypocrites in NYC - " They Say don;t letter, but don;t even clean up the trash that falls from their trucks - pathetic
So many deliveries so many big trucks.. The trees are dropping like flies.
Trees are so vital to the well-being of this city. Try walking around a neighborhood without trees and you can feel the difference. The EV is fortunate to not only have a lot of trees, but a lot of mature trees. The problem is we've lost a lot of trees to storms, construction, trucks, etc, and the replacements are always saplings which either die from abuse or dog pee. I wish we could get the city to plant bigger trees so they have a chance of survival. It can be done.
"Avenue Trees" as I like to call them live a hazardous life. Bike lanes have really help trees lucky enough to be growing nearby but "Island Tress" unfortunately are living on borrowed time.
Regarding empty tree wells, contact the Parks Department about getting a new tree, it might not come this the fall this year which is the optimal time apparently for plant a new tree.
STOP REMOVING TREES!
So heartbreaking. There is a food delivery company from Brooklyn that delivers to a restaurant on the corner of 12th and A and the guy backed up and smashed through the protection fencing around the tree there and it smacked up against the tree and damaged the trunk. He just shrugged when we told him what he did.
The city's about to remove 1000 tress from the East River Park, if we don't stop them!

Good luck with your sapling. Here on 11th St., they always die quickly; it's so sad, like a metaphor right outside your window representing inevitable environmental death. Directly near the mosque where Con Ed blasts the noxious fumes from under the street. Related? Perhaps. Air pollution just barely makes the news in these crazy times.
