Barnyard Cheese Shop is closing for good tomorrow

Photos yesterday by Stacie Joy

Tomorrow is the last day in business for Barnyard Cheese Shop at 168 Avenue B between 10th Street and 11th Street.

Owner Beatriz Gutierrez confirmed the news (H/T Elsie) to EVG contributor Stacie Joy.

Gutierrez said Victor, her longtime cook, suffered a loss during the pandemic — his brother died. Victor wants and needs to return home to be with his family in Mexico.
Gutierrez said that she has repeatedly tried to find kitchen staff but can't, so she is forced to close Barnyard. She stressed that this is not a lack-of-business issue — it's wholly staffing-related.

She has a lease on the space until the end of November and may do some catering here. Gutierrez also said she may hold on to the storefront for another venture in the future, though she isn't sure right at this moment.
Barnyard, which offers cheeses, cured meats, salads and delicious specialty sandwiches, first opened in 2008 on Ninth Street and Avenue C ... moving to its current location in late 2016.
Her companion shop next door, Brix Wines, will remain open.

My goodness Grieve.. it’s a bad news beat on B morning. Love both Barnyard and Rue B. They’ll be missed.

Very sad to lose Barnyard. I've been getting sandwiches there since I moved to the neighborhood in 2011. I hope the owner is able to do something else with the space.

One of the best food places in the EV. Sad to see them go.

Damn. This was such a good place. I am shocked. I always got their Figgy Piggy and asked them to add extra fig jam and basil. They obliged, charged a little extra and were so cool. I might have to stop in today, get one more last sandwich and say goodbye. This is a huge loss for our neighborhood. I wish Beatriz and Victor the very best.

I’ve been patronizing Beatriz and her fantastic businesses since she opened Brix Wines back when it was on 9th street, hoping she can regroup and start another business in the space.

I loved their meatball subs. So sad to lose a great sandwich place.

Wow, such a bummer. It's been so busy lately! Strange they couldn't find anyone...didn't even know they were trying to hire?

Sad to hear for Victor and Barnyard.
I get it had many challenges finding help for my shop during pandemic. Now that unemployment has mostly ended, more people are available. It takes many tries, I am still hiring a PT, grateful for the great staff I have.
I have a feeling good things will be happening at the space on ave B. & for Beatriz.

I'm still so sad about this, someone in the neighborhood should take over the space and offer sandwiches like they did - we need it!
