Workers yesterday removed the (iconic,
sort of?) Papaya Dog signage off the former hot dogeria on the NW corner of First Avenue and 14th Street... (
thanks to @ptrbrckwll for the top photo and Kent Jones for this pic)...
So the big question: What's coming next to this space? (Work permits only mention renovation of an existing eating/drinking establishment, etc.) To answer the question:
We don't know!
PD shuttered without any warning last October (first reported
here) after 16 years in business.

The answer is a BAR, what else?
The design firm listed on the DOB permit works with an array of chains, including Taco Bell and DD, and a few smaller coffee brands. But there's nothing else at the moment to indicate who the new tenant might be...
I still miss the two-dogs-and-a-drink special, the grape drink (which has vanished from just about every other place in the city) and the nice guys who worked there. It will probably be some crappy chain that already has a location within a couple of blocks.
How is this corner not being developed? What a waste having a one story building here.
The other tenants in this building are still open and doing well so I doubt they will do anything with this lot for awhile unless the landlord wants to buy their leases out. It's probably going to be another fast food place.
What a trolling developer.
Because I would like property to be used for residential developments as opposed to an underutilized one story full of restaurants? Get our of your echo chamber and actually look around
Awesome, hope you're right.
The real iconic one, on 72nd St and Broadway, still has the grape drink, and still has the recession special.
@11:03am: You are feeling deprived of soulless glass box overdevelopment? Get help.
Empanada Mama is opening at this location.
