These 'Friends' are looking to care for Tompkins Square Park

A group of East Village residents have come together to form Friends of Tompkins Square Park ... "neighbors working to build a new group to advocate for TSP."

The group's first event is this Saturday (Oct. 8). Volunteers can meet at the Park office/fieldhouse at 9 a.m. to pick up trash and rake leaves.

On Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friends of Tompkins Square Park will gather in the main lawn/central plaza to plant flower bulbs and spruce up the garden areas.
Gloves and tools will be provided ... though you are welcome to bring your own favorite trash grabber or rake.

City parks have faced maintenance staff shortages in recent months... which has been noticeable to East Village residents who frequent Tompkins Square Park.

The Partnerships for Parks is mentoring Friends of Tompkins Square Park.

Background: "Partnerships for Parks is a unique public-private partnership between City Parks Foundation and NYC Parks that supports and champions neighborhood volunteers by giving them the tools they need to advocate and care for their neighborhood parks and green spaces."

Translation: You do our job for free. Thanks much, NYC.

Great initiative and will definitely help but it's depressing the city is neglecting care for the park. Does anyone know how we would go about organizing one of the constant cleanup groups that hires individuals to clean the streets that seem ubiquitous in midtown?

Terrific. It seems like lots of people want change/improvement in the park so if they can all unite the community it could be a help rather than random 311 calls and random complaints to community board committees. Most well used/loved parks have groups like this for Volunteer projects and to advocate for the neighborhood. Does anyone know if there is a contact point or mailing list to get on?

We’re still forming, but wanted to get the ball rolling with these Partnerships for Parks Fall initiatives. We’ll be sharing more information (like contact person) later this month. Please come out & help do some yard work in Tompkins Square Park on Saturday Oct. 8th. Our email address is Hello@FriendsofTompkinsSquarePark.com

Will you be organizing on days other than weekends? Sadly, I work.

Allie- do you think Is the Oct 8th day is
small-child friendly?

It looks like the 15th would be if we are planting bulbs…?

Nice. Unfortunately there is also a brutal irony: By beautifying our park and neighborhood, we make it more desirable to live here, which drives then real estate values up and squeezes the less monied among us out of our homes, thereby destroying the community ...

This is insane. We pay taxes for this shit.

This is greatly appreciated! Litter in TSP has gotten worse & worse. I pick-up litter every time I walk through.

Yes. Do you vote for people that allocate money for it? And, kid, even people in Wisconsin have to help their community these days , because there isn’t enough money to keep sh*t nice. Grow up.

Bravo! I applaud the organizers and will definitely volunteer. See? This is how you have a nice community.

Ummm, we will never defeat NYU. That is the ultimate reason this neighborhood will cease to be for living, working people. They don’t pay taxes and the boomer grandchildren are endless. Eventually this will all be a pile of vomit and used target bags.
